About the Book
We love the classics — books like Wind in the Willows, Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh and so many others. These books have touched countless hearts over the decades, with their charming animal characters, heartwarming moments, the challenges faced, and the kindness that prevails.
Our book, The Yellow Cottage: A Critter’s Tale, was created from a deep appreciation for these beloved classics. It celebrates wholesome storytelling that inspires imagination, creativity, kindness, and virtue. The tales follow the adventures of small woodland animals living around a country cottage. As they face changes to their home and encounter perils and uncertainties, they demonstrate bravery, strength, wisdom, and compassion — all while living in a community of wildlife.
The idea for the book first took root during our time living in the yellow cottage, nestled in the countryside. At one point, we had a bit of a mouse problem – which was perhaps also their human problem. We found ourselves wondering, What was their side of the story? That question sparked our imagination, eventually leading to the creation of a world within and around the cottage – where critters had homes, hopes, and challenges of their own.
In an era of digital & AI-generated art, we created this book in the traditional way—using pen, paper, watercolors, and the creativity of our own human brains. We wanted this book to be not only an unforgettable story, but also a beautiful physical object—a true work of art. Included in the novel are 24 chapters of whimsical and heartwarming stories, stunning watercolor and ink illustrations, a glossary of intriguing words, and a critters field guide. This self-published book will be elegantly casebound in a classic linen hardcover, giving it the timeless quality it deserves.
Inspired by our life in Oregon, the stories were written on quiet days in the cozy cottage, and the illustrations came to life in a messy but joy-filled art studio. Keeping the project close to home felt important, so the book will be locally printed by Brown Printing in Portland, Oregon.
We’re overjoyed to be sharing this book with you soon. Your support, kindness, and encouragement have made all the difference—thank you for being part of this adventure with us!
With Hugs & Tail Waves,
Christine, Sarah, and the Critters
